The Federal State Institution Russian Ilizarov Scientific Center for Restorative Traumatology and Orthopaedics (RISC RTO) is one of the largest scientific centers in Russia that has been specializing in the treatment of orthopaedic diseases and injuries with the unique method of transosseous osteosynthsis and external fixation that provide rehabilitation for patients with severe pathologies of the locomotor system. The Center holds the priority in developing the methods for limb lengthening and limb deformity correction, defect management, and treatment of congenital and acquired pathology of the hand or foot.

The Center has introduced highly effective medical technologies into its clinical activity, such as joint replacement and arthroscopy. New techniques of limb lengthening in automated mode using the designed at the Center automatic distractor and stimulation methods for bone tissue regeneration have been developed and mastered. New developments have been patented in the RF and abroad. Their introduction into practice has resulted in a new conception for rehabilitative treatment of patients with shortened limbs, bone defects, pathology of the foot and hand, as well as in a complex of tactical and organization measures, devices, and ways for providing optimal conditions for reparative process stimulation, functional restoration and 2 to 4 times reduction of the treatment period.

The adequate complex of rehabilitation measures for the patients with major joint pathology as well as surgical and conservative orthopaedic correction of the pathology have provided improvement of anatomical and functional treatment outcomes and reduction of the period of temporary disability as compared with traditional methods. Consistent disability and treatment cost decrease due to prevention of development of severe osteoarthritis and other major joint pathology.

The method of transosseous osteosynthesis has stepped beyond the conventional orthopaedics and traumatology. At present, it is used in patients with spine and spinal cord pathology, congenital limb anomalies, vascular limb and brain disorders, bone cysts and tumours.

The Ilizarov fixator is used to eliminate acquired and congenital limb discrepancy (up to 50 cm), pseodoarthrosis and bone defects, limb deformities including post-rickets and post-poliomyelitic ones, achondroplasia, Erlacher-Blount disease, bone malunuions, and sequelae of hematogenous osteomyelitis. It is used to manage various types of major joint pathology, such as uni- and bilateral hip dislocation, Perthes disease, hip dysplasia, deforming arthrosis, joint ankyosis in malposition, as well as anomalies of hand and foot, sydactyly, congenital and acquired hand and foot stumps, Dupuitren’s disease, clubhand and clubfoot.

The Center’s structure comprises a consultative department, a clinic for 800 beds, an experimental department for 300 animals, a pilot plant, a faculty for advanced training in traumatology and orthopaedics, post-graduate education and residency faculties . There are 18 clinical departments and 17 scientific laboratories. The scientific and medical staff consists of 100 specialists having scientific degrees , 100 qualified surgeons and 450 nurses.
Every year the Center runs partner programs, training courses and individual training programs for Russian and foreign specialists. Some of them visit the Center to correct and to improve their skills in using Ilizarov techniques under supervision of our professors and experienced surgeons. The highly qualified staff of the Center carries out fundamental and applied medical biological and medical engineering research to study the process of bone and soft tissues regeneration, and develops highly technological methods for treating patients.

Our Center is the only clinical institution in Russia whose system of quality management was appreciated and certified as complying with the requirements of the international standard ISO 9001:2000. In 2001 our institution became laureate of the RF government Quality Award. The Center is included into the Register of the largest hospitals of the world.
