February 6, 2008. The first hand joint replacement operation was carried out at RISC for RTO. The patient that underwent the operation suffers from rheumatoid arthritis.

The operation was performed under the guidance of Prof. Vladimir I. Shevtsov by the head of the orthopaedic department №8 Natalia G. Shikhaleva, who is candidate of medical sciences.

Natalia G. Shikhaleva had her training in France to specialize in this type of surgeries and successfully carried out her first operation of this kind. This type of replacement can be indicated also in posttraumatic conditions of hand joints.

The efficiency of this treatment consists in pain relief in the joints and in considerable functional and cosmetic improvement of the hand, and therefore of the quality of life of a patient. The inpatient stay lasts for 2 weeks.

The center’s workers have always perfected their skills in the techniques used to treat orthopaedic conditions and study the best methods that exist in the world practice. Other new technologies for reconstruction of the hand are expected to be introduced in March of this year.
