Nowadays Russian Ilizarov Scientific Center for Restorative Traumatology and Orthopaedics, founded in 1971, is still a leader in orthopaedic researches. It would be impossible to keep leading positions in this area without permanent scientific search and introduction of the obtained results into practice. Therefore, the scientific work in the Center runs on the constant basis in two trends: the first is interaction of basic and applied science with practical medicine; and the second is training and supporting young scientists.

Thanks to support of general director of RSC RTO, prof. Vladimir I. Shevtsov, Society of young scientists of RISC RTO was founded. The main objective of the Society is to join up all creative young people, to organize their labor, to assist in their scientific and professional activity. It is a union of young scientists under 35 years old at the RISC RTO. Previously there was a Board of Young Scientists of the Kurgan Research Institute for Experimental and Clinical Orthopaedics and Traumatology (KNIIEKOT) organized in 1970.

Most of the young physicians and scientific workers are involved in the research work in orthopaedics and traumatology, radiology, physiology, biochemistry, veterinary medicine, biomechanics as well as in new scientific and practical trends of angiology, spine surgery and neurosurgery, oncology.
From 1999 to 2002 the young researchers together with senior supervisors filed in 70 rationalization proposals, 23 innovation applications and useful models, two application on software products.

The structure of the Center includes the experimental scientific department, which consists of:

• the laboratory of experimental traumatology and orthopaedics
• the experimental and clinical laboratory of vertebrology and neurosurgery
• the research group of experimental vertebrology
• the research group of clinical vertebrology and neurosurgery
• the experimental and clinical group of neuro- and microsurgery
• laboratory of joint pathology
• scientific and clinical department of morphologic investigations
• laboratory of immunologic and haematologic investigations
• laboratory of radionuclide diagnostics
• laboratory of radiological and ultrasonic methods of examination
• laboratory of physiotherapy
• scientific, clinical and experimental department of functional investigations of locomotor system
• biochemical laboratory
• laboratory of scientific and clinical microbiology
