The Russian Ilizarov Scientific Center for Restorative Traumatology and Orthopaedics was founded in 1971 in Kurgan (Russia). Now it is one of the world largest research and clinical centers of orthopaedic specialization. Through all this time, our doctors collected the unique experience to cure locomotor pathology. There are all necessary conditions to offer our patients high qualify of treatment and to make them feel comfortable in 17 specialized departments that provide over 800 beds.

The Center’s unique methods for treatment of locomotor system pathology have already cured thousands of people. The Ilizarov method of transosseous osteosynthesis is especially effective for severe comminuted and gunshot fractures of limb bones where other methods are not successful. It provides unlimited possibilities to correct congenital and acquired limb discrepancy (up to and over 50 cm), bone pseudoarthroses and defects, various deformities, poliomyelitic sequelae, mal-united fractures, hand and foot diseases, and many other pathologies.

Treatment at the Center includes not only operations but envelops a whole host of rehabilitation procedures.

Presently, the method of transosseous osteosynthesis has stepped far beyond the borders of classical orthopaedics and traumatology. Centre researchers have developed and now successfully apply Ilizarov techniques for treatment of tumors and tumor-like bone diseases, severe spine deformities and spine injuries, including those accompanied by spinal cord trauma.

World-first in clinical practice, prof. V.Shevtsov has developed techniques for filling in cranium bone defects and formation of additional cerebral blood flow in patients with ischemic brain disturbances (strokes). Successful application of techniques for treatment of obliterating vascular diseases of the lower limbs saves hundreds of patients from limb amputation. Great experience has been accumulated in treatment of one of the most severe purulent necrotic bone diseases – chronic osteomyelitis of various etiology or location.

RISC RTO is famous for its well-equipped experimental department, the basis for fundamental science and development of new techniques of reconstructive and restorative operations, including techniques for filling in vast defects of nervous trunks.

The fact that the medical world and the general public have been speaking about the Ilizarov method and its school for over 25 years testifies to its importance in the worlds of both healthcare and scientific developments. The government of the Russian Federation has highly honoured the Centre’s medical activity by conferring its Quality Award, for exceptional quality of medical service and the introduction of sophisticated technology into treatment.
