on conducting the teaching seminar and demonstrative operation in Federal State Institution "Russian Ilizarov Scientific Centre "Restorative Traumatology and Orthopaedics" using the system of computer navigation "Ci" and condular prosthesis PFC Sigma of "DePuy"company (Johnson & Johnson).







In June 6,8, 2007 "DePuy"company (Johnson & Johnson) conducted the teaching seminar concerning the application of computer navigation "Ci"during condylar prosthetics. The German surgeon and some Russian surgeons performed demonstrative operation with application of endoprosthesis PFC Sigma.

Navigation systems appeared in endoprosthetics only 5 years ago. But nowadays their high efficiency is proved by numerous clinical observations and researches.

Computer navigation plays the great role in condylar prosthetics. Because during the operation the surgeon has to take into account the great number of nuances which can later effect the result: the level of bone resections, the position of endoprosthesis components, the balance of soft tissues.

Modern navigation systems allow to take into account all above-mentioned factors during the operation and help the surgeon carry out the procedure accurately. It is necessary to point out that computer builds an individual model of the extremity of every single patient. With the help of computer navigation the surgeon can make manipulations accurate within 0,1mm and 0,1 degree. This increases the period of work of endoprosthesis.

It is important to develop navigation systems to certain models of endoprosthetic devices. It will help surgeon choose the size of the components for every individual patient.

The choice of the model of the endoprosthesis also plays the important role in joint replacement. Endoprosthesis PFC Sigma is successfully used since 1984. Over 1,5 million endoprosthetics all over the world were performed with the help of this device.

Besides, the system PFC Sigma includes a great number of options for different clinical cases and categories of patients. For example, rotary platform, which reduces the wear of polyethylene connector and restores biomechanics of knee-joint, is used for active young patients. This endoprosthesis allows to reach yaw of 150 degrees. It gives the opportunity for patients to perform all the habitual movements.

Navigation systems are now being used in the leading clinics of Moscow, St. Petersburg and also in Kurgan.
