The Federal State-Financed Institution Russian Ilizarov Scientific Center for Restorative Traumatology and Orthopaedics of the RF Ministryofhealthcare and social development is home to the method of transosseous osteosynthesis or Ilizarov method. The method has been currently applied in more than 40 countries worldwide.
The RISC RTO deals with a great range of diseases and injuries of the musculoskeletal system, starting from fractures of any location or complexity and finishing with bone tumors. Annually, over 9,000 people receive treatment and rehabilitation at the RISC RTO. Patients of any country and age group, from infants to senior citizens, can apply for treatment at our Center.
The aim of the Ilizarov Center staff is to prevent bone injury sequelae and resolve bone diseases in early childhood.
The treatment techniques used for managing orthopedic diseases and injuries include the internationally recognized Ilizarov transosseous osteosynthesis method and other well-established techniques such as arthroscopy, joint replacement, and intramedullary osteosynthesis.
The Center has a powerful department of neurosurgery where specialists successfully apply a great variety of reconstructive surgeries for congenital anomalies, scoliosis, injuries and degenerative diseases of the spine. Spinal cord neurostimulation is used for spinal cord injury sequelae and chronic pain syndrome. Complex reconstructive interventions are performed in the cervical and craniocervical spine areas.
The first department in Russia for managing bone infection, osteomyelitis, is also based in the Kurgan Center. Its highly skilled surgeons comprehensively solve the problem of bone infection and simultaneously treat orthopedic conditions using the unique techniques. They successfully eliminate severe consequences complicated by infection around implants. The unique 40-years’ experience of the surgeons in curing more than 4,000 patients, the excellent clinical and scientific base that includes bacteriological and immunological laboratories have created, in its essence, a complex which has been acknowledged as the National Center for Purulent Osteology.
The Centeris the place where techniques for limb lengthening, management of non-unions and pseudoarthrosis, sequelae of poliomyelitis, bone defects, congenital and acquired pathology of the hand and foot were first devised and introduced into clinical practice.
The Center is one of the first hospitals in Russia to initiate replacement of major and small joints. Arthroscopy has been also widely applied for treating joint conditions. Neglected pelvic deformities and conditions can be solved using the developed here osteosynthesis techniques.
The Center has a teaching department arranging training courses in the Ilizarov method for Russian and foreign specialists. Its highly qualified staff includes 10 professors, 34 doctors of sciences and 193 candidates of sciences.
The Centercomprises a clinic where 250 patients can be consulted and diagnosed daily, an 800-bed hospital, an experimental department and animal surgery.
The quality of medical services rendered by the Kurgan Ilizarov Center has been recognized as one of the best in Russia. The Center is a prizewinner of the Russian Federation Government Quality Award.
The expertise of the Center’s scientists and surgeons, up-to-date equipment, the unique techniques for diagnosis and treatment, comfortable conditions and considerate attitude of the medical staff to the patients contribute much to the successful work of the Russian Ilizarov Scientific Center for Restorative Traumatology and Orthopaedics.
Since the 1st of October 2010 Gubin Alexander Vadimovich, M.D., is the head of the Federal State Institution Russian Ilizarov scientific centre for Restorative Traumatology and Orthopaedics of the RF Ministry of healthcare and social development.
